Rubeus Hagrid – Italian Description

<< Giusto, va’, non mi sono presentato. Rubeus Hagrid, Custode delle Chiavi e dei Luoghi a Hogwarts >>

Although I mentioned that I would complete the Dursley family, I thought it might be nicer to follow up the horrible Vernon Dursley with one of the most loveable characters in Harry Potter – Rubeus Hagrid.

Hagrid is first introduced in chapter 1 (Il bambino sopravvissuto), when he delivers baby Harry to Privet Drive.

If the motorcycle was huge, it was nothing to the man sitting astride it. He was almost twice as tall as a normal man and at least five times as wide. He looked simply too big to be allowed, and so wildlong tangles of bushy black hair and beard hid most of his face, he had hands the size of trash can lids, and his feet in their leather boots were like baby dolphins. In his vast, muscular arms he was holding a bundle of blankets.

As you can see, the initial description of Hagrid is reasonably long and focuses on his size and his hair. Unlike with Vernon Dursley, here J. K. Rowling has used similes and metaphors to truly give an impression of the vastness of Hagrid (see the sentences in orange).

The next descriptive sentence has the same focus:

He bent his great, shaggy head over Harry and gave him what must have been a very scratchy, whiskery kiss.

We meet Hagrid again in Chapter 4 (Il custode delle chiavi) where he has busted a door down in an attempt to reach Harry.

A giant of a man was standing in the doorway. His face was almost completely hidden by a long, shaggy mane of hair and a wild, tangled beard, but you could make out his eyes, glinting like black beetles under all the hair.

The description here is very similar to that of Chapter 1 and serves as a re-introduction of the character. The only difference here is that Hagrid’s eyes are described, using another simile the imagery of which is carried on later in the same chapter.

Harry looked up into the fierce, wild, shadowy face and saw that the beetle eyes were crinkled in a smile.

I hope this has been interesting, let me know if you have a favourite character that you want me to look at next!

Ciao!
